A comparison of ovarian cancer mortality in women with BRCA1 mutations undergoing annual ultrasound screening or preventive oophorectomy
Gynecologic Oncology Oct 18, 2019
Gronwald J, Lubinski J, Huzarski T, et al. - Researchers compared women with a BRCA1 mutation who registered in an ovarian cancer screening program vs women who opted for preventive oophorectomy, in terms of their survival experience. They undertook a prospective study to observe 1,964 women with a BRCA1 mutation and two ovaries intact. Neither the presence of ovarian cancer nor a bilateral oophorectomy prior to study initiation was reported in any woman. The cohort who had at least one screening ultrasound and the cohort who had preventive oophorectomy included 1,814 and 659 women, respectively. Findings revealed that a relatively poor survival was experienced by women diagnosed with ovarian cancer enrolled in an ultrasound screening program, and screening was not viewed as a viable alternative to preventive oophorectomy.
