A comparison of outcomes of trauma patients with ventilator-associated events by diagnostic criteria set
Shock Apr 23, 2019
Younan D, et al. – Because the definition for ventilator-associated pneumonia was replaced with an algorithm consisting of three categories (ventilator-associated condition [VAC], infection-related ventilator associated complication [IVAC], and possible ventilator-associated pneumonia) by the CDC, researchers compared trauma patients with ventilator-associated events (VAEs) with those with no VAEs in terms of outcomes. They used trauma registry to identify patients admitted from 2013 to 2017. To determine the link between VAEs and mortality, logistic regression was used. Increased odds of mortality due to VAEs was reported; this was especially pronounced among patients with VACs and IVACs. Among patients on ventilator support for ≥ 1 week, the associations were similar among VAE types, which indicated that no single VAE type is more severe than others.
