A comparison of open and minimally invasive surgery for hepatic and pancreatic resections among the Medicare population
Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery Jul 26, 2018
Chen Q, et al. - The utilization of Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) among Medicare patients undergoing hepatopancreatic procedures, was determined. Researchers, in addition, compared minimally invasive techniques with the conventional open approach in terms of clinical outcomes, as well as costs. Findings revealed underutilization of the MIS approach among patients undergoing liver and pancreatic procedures. Compared with the open approach, MIS was noted to be correlated with lower complication and readmission and shorter length-of-stay, as well as comparable/slightly lower Medicare payments. Thus they strongly recommend considering the MIS approach among older patients undergoing liver and pancreatic procedures.
