A comparison of characteristics and outcomes of patients admitted to the ICU with asthma in Australia and New Zealand and the United States
Journal of Asthma Feb 07, 2019
Abdelkarim H, et al. - Authors studied 2 large databases of ICU for patients admitted with critical asthma syndrome (CAS) in 2014 and 2015 to analyze the comparison of components and outcomes of candidates admitted to the ICU with asthma in New Zealand (ANZ) and the United States (US). They observed 2202 and 762 cases admitted with a primary diagnosis of CAS in the ANZ and US databases, respectively. They noticed lower respiratory rates and higher PaCO2 levels among ANZ patients. They found a low mortality rate (overall) ie, 1.23 for ANZ and 1.71 for the USA. Although, ANZ subjects also had a longer length of stay in ICU (43 vs 37 h) and hospital (105 vs 78 h).
