A comparison of alkaline water and mediterranean diet vs proton pump inhibition for treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux
JAMA OtolaryngologyâHead & Neck Surgery Oct 25, 2017
Zalvan CH, et al. - This work investigated if treatment with a diet-based approach with standard reflux precautions alone could bring about an improvement in the symptoms of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) compared with treatment with proton pump inhibition (PPI) and standard reflux precautions. The consequence of PPI on the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) based on proportion reaching a 6-point reduction in RSI did not appear to be better than that of alkaline water, a plant-based, Mediterranean-style diet, and standard reflux precautions. Nevertheless, the variation in both the therapies could be vital, favoring the dietary approach. A markedly greater percent reduction was reported in RSI with the dietary approach. The link between percent change and response to treatment was not explored. Hence, the clinical importance of such variation required additional trials. A plant-based diet and alkaline water, however, had to be taken into account for the treatment of LPR. This could effectively improve symptoms and avoid the costs and adverse effects of a pharmacological intervention. It could also yield additional health benefits related to a healthy, plant-based diet.
