A comparative study of functional outcomes following surgical treatment of early tongue cancer
Head & Neck Jul 28, 2021
Pai P, Tuljapurkar V, Balaji A, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for comparing speech, swallowing, and tongue mobility between secondary intention healing (SH) and primary closure (PC) in glossectomy for early tongue cancers. For this prospective study, 40 T1/T2 tongue cancers had wide excision followed by either PC or SH. At 1, 6, 12, and 24 weeks after surgery, both groups had their operative time, tube feeding, complications, speech, and swallowing evaluated. Both groups had comparable operating times, bleeding, tube feeding duration, and pain scores. SH after early tongue cancer resection can result in improved speech and tongue mobility with minimal morbidity. There were no major complications, with the exception of a minor secondary hemorrhage in one of the SH patients.
