A comparative study of fixation methods in adults with two-thirds distal isolated ulnar shaft fractures with a minimum of 2 year follow-up
Injury Feb 26, 2020
Gaumé M, et al. - Given a rare occurrence of adult isolated ulnar shaft fractures (IUSF), there is a necessity to establish the best methods to manage these fractures. Two forms of treatment for IUSF [(intramedullary stabilization by k-wire (IMF) vs Open Reduction Internal Fixation by plating (ORIF)] were compared concerning clinical and radiological outcomes, as well as relative costs. Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis on 54 patients (mean age: 41.2 years) who were diagnosed IUSF between January 2015 and March 2017; treatment was provided with IMF (27/54) or ORIF (27/54). The comparable clinical and radiological outcomes were achieved using reduction internal fixation by plating vs intramedullary stabilization by k-wire. Outcomes revealed the achievement significantly reduced operation time and cost with lower complications in correlation to performing IMF when compared with ORIF.
