A comparative study of desflurane vs sevoflurane in obese patients: Effect on recovery profile
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Jan 21, 2021
Bansal T, Garg K, Katyal S, et al. - Among obese patients receiving laparoscopic abdominal surgeries, postoperative recovery characteristics as well as cognitive function of desflurane vs sevoflurane were compared by studying BIS (bispectral index) guided drug titration. Experts randomly assigned 60 obese patients (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) to receive either BIS guided desflurane or sevoflurane. They evaluated recovery based on time taken for eye opening on verbal command, sustained head lift for 5 s, and extubation and orientation to time, place, and person following cessation of volatile anesthetic agent. In both study groups, a comparison was performed with respect to time taken to complete Mini mental state examination score to baseline in order to determine cognitive function. According to findings, when anesthetic concentration was carefully titrated, similar recovery profile of both desflurane and sevoflurane was noted in obese patients. A significantly earlier reversal of cognitive function was observed in obese patients anesthetized with sevoflurane.
