A comparative analysis of long-term mortality after carotid endarterectomy and carotid stenting
Journal of Vascular Surgery Jun 20, 2018
Columbo JA, et al. - Long-term mortality after carotid endarterectomy (CEA) vs carotid artery stenting (CAS) was assessed using a propensity-matched cohort via studying all patients who underwent CEA or CAS within the Vascular Quality Initiative from 2003 to 2013 (CEA, n = 29,235; CAS, n = 4415). Patients who underwent CEA vs those who underwent CAS in the Vascular Quality Initiative showed a long-term survival advantage in real-world practice during the last 15 years. Although randomized trials did not demonstrate any difference in long-term survival between CAS and CEA, this observational study identified a survival benefit for CEA that did not diminish with risk adjustment.
