A clinical pathway for the postoperative management of hypocalcemia after pediatric thyroidectomy reduces blood draws
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Dec 18, 2017
Patel NA, et al. - The upshot of a new thyroidectomy postoperative management protocol was comprehensively analyzed by the authors on the number of postoperative calcium blood draws and the length of hospital stay. A marked reduction was determined in the number of calcium blood draws after the introduction of a standardized protocol based on intraoperative parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. No change was observed in the hospital length of stay. The data disclosed that the adoption of a standardized postoperative protocol based on intraoperative PTH levels could reduce the number of blood draws in children undergoing thyroidectomy.
