A clinical comparison and economic evaluation of techniques used in maxillomandibular fixation
JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jun 27, 2019
Edmunds MC, et al. - In this historical cohort study involving 93 patients, researchers ascertained the relationship of Erich arch bars, 4-point fixation, and bone-supported arch bars in maxillomandibular fixation with hospital charges and clinical results. Participants in the study were patients with mandible fracture who had maxillomandibular fixation from January 1, 2005, to June 30, 2015, at a tertiary care center. Findings revealed that Erich arch bars were significantly more costly than 4-point fixation and bone-supported arch bars, while charges were similar between 4-point fixation and bone-supported arch bars. Overall, the authors concluded that bone-supported arch bars have similar complication outcomes, operative time for placement, and overall charges compared to Erich arch bars and 4-point fixation, and are less likely to require removal in an operating setting.
