A case-control study of the association between metabolic syndrome and colorectal cancer: A comparison of International Diabetes Federation, National Cholesterol Education Program Adults Treatment Panel III, and World Health Organization definitions
Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology Jul 26, 2018
Ulaganathan V, et al. - Researchers performed a multi-centered matched case control study to investigate the link between metabolic syndromes (MetS) and its components with colorectal cancer (CRC), based on the three established definitions and by using a multiple variable analysis using Cox regression. They matched 140 histologically confirmed CRC cases with 280 cancer free controls. Using three definitions, they measured mean value and commonness of the components of metabolic syndrome between cases and controls. Findings suggested, that vs other universal complex MetS definitions, higher clinical usefulness may be had by a simple measurement of abdominal obesity, abnormal BP and HDL-cholesterol (especially using International Diabetes Federation definition of MetS for South Asians) to detect individuals at CRC risk.
