A 9 years comparison of weight loss, disappearance of obesity, and resolution of diabetes mellitus with biliointestinal bypass and with adjustable gastric banding: Experience of a collaborative network
Acta Diabetologica Nov 14, 2018
Pontiroli AE, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers compared long-term effects of the two procedures—biliointestinal bypass (BIBP) and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB)—on body weight, clinical and metabolic variables, and resolution of obesity and of diabetes. For this investigation, they considered all procedures performed between January 1, 1998, and December 31, 2005. A total of 73 of 91 patients undergoing BIBP and 154 of 249 patients undergoing LAGB were evaluable up to 9 years in this analysis. According to findings, BIBP and LAGB exert long-term effects on body weight, blood pressure, and resolution of diabetes mellitus. Compared with the effect of LAGB in terms of weight loss, resolution of obesity, control of systolic blood pressure, and serum cholesterol, the effect of BIBP is significantly greater; however, this was not the case in terms of resolution of diabetes.
