A 10-year study of the etiopathogenesis of cysts with a study of seromucinous glands in vocal folds
The Laryngoscope Aug 09, 2019
Nerurkar NK, et al. - In view of the findings of a statistically significant increase in cysts excised as compared with polyps over the latter 5-year period (2013–2017), researchers sought for possible factors responsible for this increase. In addition, they examined the normative distribution pattern of seromucinous glands in the apparently normal vocal folds via performing a histological study. Data of all cysts and polyps excised were retrieved over a 10-year period, and findings from the initial and latter 5-year period of all cysts excised were compared. The identified predisposing factors towards mucous retention cyst formation were decreased laryngeal hydration, vocal abuse and mucous glands present in the superficial Lamina Propria. Over the latter 5-year period, they observed an increase in the number of these cysts excised as they noted an increase in air pollution.
