A 1-year perspective on goal-directed therapy in elderly with hip fracture: Secondary outcomes

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 01, 2019

Bartha E, et al. - Researchers assessed and compared secondary outcomes (at 4 months and 1 year follow-up) of a randomized controlled trial, wherein, the comparison of intra-operative goal-directed therapy to routine fluid treatment (RFT) in elderly (age ≥70) with hip-fracture resulted in no conclusive results previously. The cost-effectiveness was also assessed. They evaluated long-term survival, complications, number of hospital readmissions, and quality of life (EQ-5D) changes as secondary outcomes. On an intention to treat basis, they analyzed patient data (GDT n = 74; RFT n = 75). At 12 months, the observed survival and complications did not statistically significantly different between GDT vs RFT. Also, no statistically significant difference was evident in terms of hospital readmissions and quality of life changes. The requirement for further research in large sample sizes was realized based on the statistical uncertainty of risk attenuation of negative results and the large variability of the collected data.
