3D cone-beam CT of the ankle using a novel twin robotic x-ray system: Assessment of image quality and radiation dose
European Journal of Radiology Sep 15, 2019
Grunz JP, Kunz AS, Gietzen CH, et al. - Using a novel twin robotic x-ray system, researchers assessed image quality (IQ) and radiation dose in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) of the ankle. Using the new system’s CBCT mode, 16 cadaveric ankles were examined with standard-dose and low-dose protocols. Multi-slice CT imaging (MSCT) was performed with a clinical protocol for comparison. Although MSCT provides better overall IQ than the CBCT mode of the twin robotic x-ray system, both cone-beam protocols in most studies offer very good IQ and are suitable for clinical ankle imaging. Compared with MSCT imaging, standard-dose and particularly low-dose CBCT studies deliver up to five times less radiation dose.
