30-Day readmission rates, diagnoses, and risk factors following pediatric airway surgery
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jun 19, 2020
Chew L, Su-Velez BM, Miller JE, et al. - In a large, nationally representative sample, researchers investigated the incidence, reasons, and risk factors for hospital readmissions following pediatric airway surgeries. Utilizing data from the Nationwide Readmissions Database, pediatric airway surgeries performed across 22 states in 2014 have been identified. Ten thousand two hundred eighty-nine pediatric airway procedures over 7,120 visits have been identified. For an overall readmission rate of 13.4%, 954 readmissions were identified. respiratory distress, infection, and pneumonia were the most common categories for readmission. Stenosis of larynx and pneumonia were the top overall individual reasons for readmission. Pediatric airway surgeries have relatively high readmission rates. Readmission reduction strategies should involve addressing health disparities and using a multidisciplinary approach to improve care for patients who are medically complex.
