30-day and long-term outcome following salvage surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the anus
European Journal of Surgical Oncology Jun 28, 2018
Pedersen TB, et al. - Researchers performed a retrospective evaluation of all patients undergoing salvage surgery for squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) at Copenhagen University Hospital Herlev between 1st of January 2011 and 31st December 2016 to assess and evaluate 30-day postoperative morbidity and mortality after salvage surgery for recurrent SCCA. In addition, they examined secondary recurrence and long-term mortality after salvage surgery for recurrent SCCA. For relapse of squamous cell carcinoma of the anus, salvage surgery was noted to be a safe procedure with a good short-term outcome. Patients with R1-resection and pN≥1 showed secondary recurrence more frequently. Death of more than one-third of the patients was reported within the follow-up period. Group of patients with secondary recurrence displayed significantly higher mortality.
