25(OH) vitamin D and functional outcomes in older adults admitted to rehabilitation units: The safari study
Osteoporosis International Jan 22, 2019
Lelli D, et al. - In this prospective multicenter cohort study, investigators assessed 420 individuals (66.4% females) aged ≥ 65 years (admitted to three geriatric rehabilitation units after orthopedic events or stroke) in Italy and Spain in order to investigate the relationship between vitamin D (25[OH]D) and functional recovery among geriatric people. Outcomes included absolute functional gain (discharge-admission Barthel index) and ability to walk at 3 months after admission. They observed a positive association between 25(OH)D concentration and functional outcomes at 3 months. They suggested that dosage of 25(OH)D concentration may be a helpful tool in recognizing geriatric rehabilitation patients who are at risk for a worse functional recovery.
