2017 pediatric hypertension guidelines improve prediction of adult cardiovascular outcomes
Hypertension Apr 26, 2019
Du T, et al. - In this longitudinal study, researchers assessed the consequences 2017 pediatric hypertension definitions vs 2004 pediatric hypertension definitions on the prevalence of hypertension, and evaluated the performance of both guidelines in predicting adult hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). Participants were recruited from the Bogalusa Heart Study (n=3,940; 47% male; aged 3–18 years), with 36 years of follow-up since childhood. An increased risk of developing hypertension, metabolic syndrome, and LVH in later life was observed in children who were reclassified to higher blood pressure categories using 2017 guidelines. The 2017 guidelines enabled the identification of a group of children with adverse metabolic profile and cardiometabolic outcomes, whose cardiovascular risk appeared to be underestimated using the 2004 guidelines.
