10 years of laparoscopic common bile duct exploration: A single tertiary institution experience
American Journal of Surgery Mar 30, 2019
Ballou J, et al. - Investigators examined 281 individuals to study the 10 years outcome of laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE-LC) or ERCP plus laparoscopic cholecystectomy (ERCP-LC) for choledocholithiasis. Cholangitis, concomitant procedures, or history of Roux-en-Y or biliary surgery were excluded. They found no differences in age, sex, or ASA. They recorded shorter length of stay (LOS) for LCBDE-LC (3.1 vs 4.4 days) but total anesthesia time was longer (292 vs 262 min). No difference in total charges ($44,412 vs $51,353) was noted. They reported that 33% of LCBDE-LC were aborted due to challenges passing the dilator or scope (33%) or clearing stones (30%). They observed the necessity of post-procedure LCBDE in 2 ERCP-LC cases.
