The pressure and stresses of the pandemic are being felt across the world and it is becoming more and more important to consider its impact on the mental wellbeing of healthcare providers (HCPs). The fact that repercussions will be similar globally has been recognised by mental health experts has led to numerous publications on the subject. Here is a summary of the current findings and the recommendations from these articles.
One of the first analyses came from China in March where they aimed to assess the magnitude of the mental health outcomes and associated factors among HCPs treating patients with COVID-19. In the study, 1,257 HCPs directly engaged in diagnosing, treating, or providing nursing care to patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 from across China reported experiencing symptoms of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and distress (Lai et al, 2020).
