AJG study finds link between PPI use and increased risk of COVID-19

Findings from a recent study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology (AJG) state that people using Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) at least once a day were twice as likely to have a positive COVID-19 test as opposed to people who did not take PPIs, and those who took PPIs twice daily were four times more likely to test positive.

There is not enough data available to understand how acid suppression affects severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, previous studies gave researchers and authors Almario C.V., Chey W.D., Spiegel B.M.R., a reason to believe that there are chances of the new coronavirus infection spreading with PPI usage.
