7 technological advances that doctors will find useful

M3 India Newsdesk May 14, 2018

As technology is rapidly changing the world we live in, it is vital for doctors to keep up with the latest gadgets designed to treat patients more effectively and rapidly. Here’s the list of some of the devices and gadgets that could ease the workload of doctors, and increase their efficiency:

1. Cancer-detecting surgical pen

The all-new cancer detecting surgical pens are highly effective in diagnosing cancer in a matter of seconds. The pen is a simple, yet very effective hand-held diagnostic device that causes absolutely no damage to the target tissue, even at a microscopic level. This device greatly improves the speed and accuracy of tissue analysis. The tip of the pen when held against the target tissue for three seconds, uses a tiny amount of water to extract molecules from the tissue. The extracted combination is then sent to an instrument to identify the molecular fingerprint of cancer to find out the health status of the tissue.

2. Medical camera for endoscopy

Medical cameras were developed by researchers to work in conjunction with endoscopes. These new cameras are making it possible to track the location of an endoscope, which was formerly a tough task. This tracking helps to guide the endoscope to the right place without using X-rays or other expensive methods. It is used to investigate a series of internal conditions, more precisely to detect the sources of light inside the body, such as the illuminated tip of the endoscope's long flexible tube. This new camera device can detect light sources beyond 20 cm (~8 in) of bodily tissue. The camera will be a crucial advancement for many applications in healthcare.

3. New optical coherence tomography system

The Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system has been introduced by researchers to aid in developing a detailed image of the eyes. This is the first device ever made, that integrates high-speed electronics to achieve in-depth imaging of the whole eye. The new OCT system uses an electrically adjustable lens to focus light at different depths, which allows imaging of the entire eye. The system is also incorporated with a newly commercialized swept light source, a laser that continuously changes wavelength very rapidly to improve the resolution and speed of OCT imaging.

4. Portable 3D brain scanner

The portable brain scanner has been introduced to speed up the diagnosis of brain damage and strokes. Portable, cost-effective, and non-invasive, the device works by producing 3D images of the brain in minutes to help doctors identify a haemorrhage or a clot. The potential of its use in both hospitals and ambulances is also an attractive factor. The device helps in saving lives, minimizing brain damage, and reducing rehabilitation costs.

5. Stimwave stimulator system

Stimwave offers world’s only wireless micro-sized stimulator device, which provides a non-surgical therapy option for chronic lower back pain and leg pain. This device aims to eliminate chronic pain, eliminating the need for pills and surgery. The device is implanted through a needle and is patient-controlled from outside the body with a wireless antenna. It is placed near the nerves causing pain and the patient can operate it, as and when needed.

6. New swallowable sensor

The ‘swallowable sensor’ is a pill-sized capsule designed to help doctors detect and diagnose disorders and diseases of the gut. The disorders that can be diagnosed, range right from food and nutrient malabsorption to colon cancer. The sensor has been designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the gut, intestinal enzymes, and stomach acid, while it captures data of the intestinal gases and transmits it to a smartphone.

7. Augmented reality glasses

Augmented reality (AR) glasses were developed to enable surgeons to precisely identify the location of lymph nodes and help in rapid removal of cancerous tissue. The AR glasses were found to be comfortable and efficient during trials, and proved to be very helpful, especially while removing tumours.
