Spot Diagnosis: Can You Identify These X-ray Findings?

M3 India Newsdesk Feb 25, 2023

X-rays were the first diagnostic imaging tool to be performed, and they are still the most used non-invasive diagnostic method in use today. Test your understanding of X-ray diagnosis with this quiz.

1. The child of a primigravida presented with visible abdominal distention at birth. On inspection, peristalsis is seen over the abdominal wall. A plain abdominal X-ray of the neonate was performed, given here. What is the most likely diagnosis?

2. A 66-year-old man with complaints of asymptomatic flesh-colored skin lesions on hands, forearms, feet, and legs for three months. On examination, the skin lesions shown below were seen, later confirmed to be lichen myxedematosus after a skin biopsy. A few months later, this patient presented with acutely altered sensorium. Liver function tests showed hypergammaglobulinemia with a reversal of the A/G ratio. Serum calcium levels were repeatedly high. A skull X-ray was performed, given here. What could be the diagnosis for this patient?

3. A 6-month-old male child presented with intermittent fever and abdominal distension for 1 month and developmental delay. On examination, a pale, bulging anterior fontanelle 3 × 2 cm with dilated prominent veins over the scalp was noted, along with frontoparietal bossing, roving eyeball movements with sunset sign, and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory workup revealed anemia, leucocytosis, and thrombocytopenia. Images of a skeletal survey are given. What could be the diagnosis for this child’s condition?

4. A 27-year-old male presents to the emergency with a history of a fall from about 10 m, landing over the left arm. He walks in with his left arm supported at the elbow, in severe pain. The limb is stabilised, and an X-ray is taken, given below. What type of fracture is seen?

5. A 27-year-old man presented with complaints of left shoulder pain of one year's duration. An X-ray was performed and is given here. What could be the cause of this lesion?
