June 7 webinar to focus on managing pain in adolescents
American Dental Association News May 17, 2018
A free June 7 webinar, “Adolescent Pain Management and NSAID Considerations,” will address safe and effective treatment of acute postoperative pain when treating adolescents in the dental practice.
Scheduled from 10-11 a.m. CDT, the ADA webinar offers 1 hour of continuing education credit through the ADA Continuing Education Recognition Program.
The Association on March 26 announced a new interim policy on opioids that supports prescription limits and mandatory continuing education for dentists. The new policy, officially titled Interim Board Policy on Opioid Prescribing, is believed to be one of the first of its kind from a major health professional organization.
Dr. Paul A. Moore, who will present the webinar, has a dental degree and PhD in pharmacology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. He has published extensively on dental therapeutics including analgesics, local anesthetics, and sedation. He is a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including The Journal of the American Dental Association.
Following this presentation, the participants will be able to:
• Explain the rationale for combining the two peripherally acting analgesics, acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
• List factors that may contribute to young adult dental patients being at greater risk of opioid abuse following dental surgery.
• Provide instructional elements recommended when counseling patients regarding safe and responsible prescribing of opioids following a dental procedure.

After June 7, the webinar can be found at www.pcssnow.org. CE cannot be offered for those who watch the webinar after it is first broadcast.
